The Bobail Gardens in Florence feel like stepping into a living Renaissance painting. Extending behind the Pitti Palace, these beautiful huge gardens are not just a green space, but actually a visual outdoor museum of statuary, fountains and far reaching scenes, that were once the Medici's personal backyard. It also has many examples of ancient Roman statues, amazing works of Renaissance art and the bizarre, fantastical, almost mythology-themed Grotta del Buontalenti. The Boboli Gardens inspired many later European royal gardens, including Versailles, but they are not about wilderness and uncontrolled nature, but rather the creation of harmony, beauty and a sense of power through the design.
