On August 15, 1973, the Birla House was officially opened to the general public for the first time and was subsequently dubbed the Gandhi Smriti.

It is home to a collection of articles that discuss various aspects of Gandhi Ji's life and passing. Gandhi lived in the house during his final 144 days. The exhibitions contain contemporary art, film clips, and chambers that have been preserved just as Gandhi left them. Many people go to see the Mahatma every day, the chamber he resided in, and the prayer ground where he died as a martyr with the name of God on his lips. THINGS TO DO AT GANDHI SMRITI:

• Witness the impressive memorial to Mahatma Gandhi that features photos documenting every stage of his life, from infancy to death: The Gandhi Smriti Museum is a museum that honors Mahatma Gandhi, who is considered by many to be the father of the nation. It is sometimes known simply as the Gandhi Smriti Museum. • This home's many recollections are preserved as precious artifacts: The museum is home to many artifacts, including photographs, notebooks, books, relics, manuscripts, and audio-visual material, all connected to Mahatma Gandhi's life and philosophies. It also houses a library with over 60,000 books and bookshops selling books about Gandhi. • Visit the Martyr's Column inside the house: The room in which Gandhi lived and the spot where he was shot is on display for visitors to view. After spending the final 144 days of his life at Birla Bhavan, on January 30, 1948, a Hindu extremist shot him dead after he spoke out against inter-communal violence. When Mahatma Gandhi was praying, Nathuram Godse opened fire and killed him. • The museum also features a shop that sells goods produced by the village industry and khadi: Gandhi supported the use of khadi, a type of homespun cotton, during the Independence movement, and the modest clothing store inside the grounds sells clothing fashioned from this material. • The museum screens programs and videos to provide visitors with a taste of Gandhiji's life: At this juncture, a number of national and international directors have tackled the subject of Mahatma Gandhi's life through the medium of film.
