Jehangir's Tomb & Kamran's Baradari Pavilion

Jahangir's mausoleum lies in Shahdara, a Lahore neighborhood to the northwest of the city. When Jahangir and his wife Nur Jahan lived in Lahore, the location was one of their favorite hangouts, and it was frequently utilized as a starting point for trips to and from Lahore and Kashmir. Jahangir might have been initially interred in Shahdara's various gardens when he passed away in 1627. His son Shah Jahan gave the command to construct a mausoleum worthy of an emperor as a lasting monument. The chahar bagh layout with water channels was used to split the square garden into four sections. The water flowing over the chutes from the fountains that were placed in ponds created a stunning effect. Eight wells that were just outside the enclosing wall provided water for the tomb garden. Persian wheels were used to raise the water to aqueducts running along the top of the wall, where it was subsequently pumped into terra cotta pipes that supplied several fountains and tanks. Although the original plantation is no longer there, there are lovely fruit trees that date back to colonial times. It is now a well-liked picnic location for Lahore. Each of the eight chahar baghs has a fountain in the middle, with an avenue running between them, forming a ring of eight fountains around the main tomb. Water pipes that are no longer in existence were used to raise the water into channels atop the walls from wells outside the garden for the fountains. After entering the fountains, the water continued to flow through terra cotta pipes and into the small channels that ran throughout the garden. On the west side of the Akbari, serai is where you enter the walled tomb garden. Numerous red sandstone muqarnas, an architectural feature with niches, are carved into the imposing entrance. On the north and south of the Akbari, serai is gateways, while on the west is a mosque from the time before the Mughals. The tomb edifice, which is covered in red sandstone and marble inlays, is located in the middle of a garden that is roughly 600 gaz square. The mausoleum lies atop a large pedestal, and each of its four corners is capped by a tall minaret. Inside, Jahangir's sarcophagus is adorned with the ninety-nine names of God and a vegetal pietra dura design. Tile mosaics with floral patterns were used to create the dado on the walls inside the passageway.
