The Islamic Prophet Muhammad's foster brother, friend, and paternal uncle was Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib. He was one of the bravest warriors and hunters among the Arabs.
Al-Nasir li-Din Allah's rule saw the original construction of the Tomb of Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib. It underwent renovations in the middle of the nineteenth century, during Ottoman rule. Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib and his nephew Abdullah ibn Jahash, who was killed in the most famous Uhud battle, were truly buried in the tomb of Hamza.
At the age of 59, Hamza perished in the Battle of Uhud. An Abyssinian slave murdered Hamza with a javelin as he was facing Muhammad and dueling with two swords. This was done to avenge Hamza for killing Utba ibn Rabi'a, the father of his master at Badr. Hamza was then given the posthumous title 'Sayyid al-Shuhad' by Muhammad. Later, a mosque bearing Sayyid al-Shuhad's name was erected next to his grave.
In 1926, the mausoleum that covered Hamza's grave was destroyed. The Sayyid al-Shuhad Mosque and the Uhud Martyrs Enclave were the two distinct buildings that made up this tomb. Hamza was interred alongside his nephew Abdullah ibn Jahsh in the same grave.
- You can go to the Masjid Sayyid al-Shuhad to pray. The recently constructed mosque features two minarets and one dome. Even though this mosque and the surrounding region have no religious importance, pilgrims nonetheless come here to do salah and nawafil. This mosque's main historical relevance is that it was the scene of one of the pivotal battles in early Islamic history.
- Visit Masjid al-Fasa'h, a local mosque that is thought to be the site of the Prophet Muhammad's Zuhur prayer on the day of the battle of Uhud.
- There is also a cemetery on the site where 70 of the Prophet's supporters were laid to rest after the battle.
- You can also visit a souq beside the mosque to shop for traditional items and have some traditional delicacies.
